Our Little Milestone – Folding@home

Quite pleased really, helping humanity. The team is now in the top 25k from 250k, which means the top 10% of contributions. Most work is currently being done in the fight against Covid-19.

You will see that the figures don’t agree – this is due to updating delays, I’m told. You will also see that the credits don’t track the work units – this is because more credits are given when you can throw the processing power of a GPU at the problem, otherwise it’s just the CPU doing the work.

You too can join the fight against this and many other diseases by using the spare processing power of your computers and laptops by clicking here: https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/

It’s not necessary to join a team or even give yourself a name – it can all be done anonymously. The latest news release from the Folding@home team is from yeaterday, the 10th April, here. It starts off by saying:

This is an update on Folding@home’s efforts to assist researchers around the world taking up the global fight against COVID-19.
After initial quality control and limited testing phases, Folding@home team has released an initial wave of projects simulating potentially druggable protein targets from SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and the related SARS-CoV virus (for which more structural data is available) into full production on Folding@home. Many thanks to the large number of Folding@home donors who have assisted us thus far by running in beta or advanced modes.
This initial wave of projects focuses on better understanding how these coronaviruses interact with the human ACE2 receptor required for viral entry into human host cells, and how researchers might be able to interfere with them through the design of new therapeutic antibodies or small molecules that might disrupt their interaction.

Also, over the past few days, if you have machine running Windows 10 you can, with a double-click, automatically install a totally secure installation into the Windows Sandbox (read about the Sandbox), run it for a few days (say), close the whole thing and then it’s gone. Run when you like, securely. The script, a Powershell one, is here on GitHub, https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-Sandbox-Utilities/find/master, and the file you want is – https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-Sandbox-Utilities/blob/master/Folding%20In%20Sandbox/install_folding_sandbox_on_host.ps1

It’s mostly written by Microsoft engineers. This image shows their photos and usernames.

If you want to see how I did it, see the next page.
